THE Curators Corner

John Arguelles says: I am a product of the 1960s. As I look back in time to reflect on my particular sense of curatorial style, I realize I am a mid-century modern man. I've lived in Southern Californian all my life but have had the opportunity to travel the globe on numerous occasions for work and pleasure, which are usually the same thing. From Corporate and private party planner to CEO of a Couture Fashion House to the present (I call it the third chapter) I have always been able to say, " I love what I do for a living".

"I became a curator by accident when my hobby turned into a career."

I am a third generation Curator. My mom Toni and her mom, my grandmother Mary He says he never fully appreciated the decor that he was surrounded by as a kid. Avocado Green shag carpeting (that had to be racked too indicate to company that it was recently groomed), Turquoise, Chinese-modern, tufted silk, sectional sofas (encased in plastic protection covers), feather floral arrangements that were made by his mom and her sidekick neighbor, Mabel. Made in multiples with the intent of selling them at the local swap meet on the weekends. After 4 months of feather floral arranging and the sacrifice of the garage and the dining room in two households, My mom and her gal pal threw in the towel and ended their budding business. But watching them at the swap meet became something I started to do in various iterations and although I am not there every weekend I am there at least one Saturday a month. so what we are exposed to as kids stays with us forever and as a result I love the furniture I grew up with and my lack of enthusiasm turned into a deep fondness. Now I dream of sleek Lane Furnishings including large glass topped teak coffee table which hosted an angry gilded bull about to charge the matador, and large olive green square glass ashtrays and round amber candy dishes sitting next to a Vetiver and Sunkist Orange colored bunch of oversized resin grapes.
